The Samaritan Woman: An Encounter with Living Water
Scripture Reading: John 4:1–42
Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well reveals His grace, His knowledge of the human heart, and His power to give everlasting life. Although Jews and Samaritans were divided, Jesus spoke to her and offered something greater than the water she had come to draw.
Jesus said, “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst” (John 4:14, KJV). The living water He offered points to the spiritual life that comes from Him. Ordinary water satisfies thirst temporarily; Christ gives life that reaches beyond our earthly needs.
During their conversation, Jesus revealed that He knew her circumstances. He addressed the truth about her life while continuing to make Himself known to her. He also taught that true worship is not confined to a particular mountain or city: “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24, KJV).
After Jesus identified Himself as the Messiah, the woman left her waterpot and went into the city. She invited others to meet Him, saying, “Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?” (John 4:29, KJV). Many Samaritans believed because of her testimony, and others believed after hearing Jesus themselves.
Personal Application
This passage encourages us to respond honestly to Christ and receive the life He offers. Our past does not prevent us from coming to Him. Like the Samaritan woman, we can share what we have learned of Jesus and invite others to hear His Word for themselves.
Reflection Question
What has Jesus done in your life that you can share to encourage someone else to seek Him?
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the everlasting life You give through Jesus Christ. Help us worship You in spirit and in truth, receive Your Word with honest hearts, and share our testimony with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
