God again speaks, and His Word begins establishing greater order within the created world. In Genesis 1:4, God divided the light from the darkness . Now, in Genesis 1:6, God commands another division: the waters from the waters. This verse introduces the firmament , one of the most important terms to understand in the opening chapter of Genesis. “And God Said” Once again creation responds to the spoken command of God. “And God said...” This phrase repeatedly appears throughout Genesis 1. God does not struggle with creation. He does not require assistance. He does not negotiate with the waters. He speaks.
