Genesis 2:1–3 — Sabbath begins with God’s completed work Genesis does not actually use the noun Sabbath in Genesis 2:2–3, but it uses the Hebrew verb שָׁבַת ( shābat ) , meaning “to cease” or “to stop.” God finished His work, ceased from His creative work, blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it. Notice the order: Work → Completion → Rest → Blessing → Holiness God did not rest because He was exhausted. His rest signifies that His creative work had reached its intended completion.
