Genesis 1:14-16 Lights in Heaven | Genesis Bible Study

Genesis 1:14–16 — Lights in the Firmament of Heaven

“And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.” — Genesis 1:14–16 (KJV)

And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

Genesis 1:14–16 begins the fourth day of creation. God now appoints lights in the firmament of heaven and gives them specific functions: they are to divide day from night, give light upon the earth, and mark signs, seasons, days, and years.

Genesis - The Day of Christ's Birth | Speak His Word Only

Why December 25?

In the Ethiopian calendar, the Nativity of Christ is celebrated on Taḥṣās 29, which corresponds to January 7 Gregorian.
However, December 25 is also acknowledged within the ancient Christian tradition as the reckoning of Christ’s birth, tied to creation theology, not pagan substitution as commonly claimed.

The Ethiopian Church understands December 25 as theologically symbolic and chronologically reasoned, not mythologically borrowed.

Creation–Incarnation Theology (Ethiopian Reasoning)

1. Christ Conceived at Creation’s Turning Point

Ethiopian fathers teach:

  • Christ was conceived on March 25

  • Exactly nine months later → December 25

This aligns with:

  • The spring equinox (light overcoming darkness)

  • Christ as Berhān (Light) entering the world

John 1:9

“The true Light, which lights every man, coming into the world”

Light Theology (Central to Ethiopian Thought)

The Ethiopian tradition is deeply light-centered, from Genesis → Enoch → John → Revelation.

December 25 Theology:

  • Occurs after the winter solstice

  • Days begin to grow longer

  • Light increases after deepest darkness

This is seen as creation preaching Christ.

Genesis 1:3 — “Let there be light”
John 8:12 — “I am the Light of the world”

The Church teaches that creation itself bears witness to Christ’s birth.

Royal Birth Motif

In Ethiopian royal theology:

  • Kings are born at appointed times

  • Christ’s birth was ordered by divine wisdom

  • December 25 represents order, kingship, and fulfillment

Galatians 4:4

“When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son”

Ethiopian Synaxarium (Sənkessar) Teaching

The Ethiopian Synaxarium teaches:

  • Christ’s birth is timeless in effect

  • The date is less about astronomy and more about divine economy

  • The Church honors the mystery, not speculation

The emphasis is:

God entered time to redeem time

Not Pagan Replacement (Ethiopian Position)

The Ethiopian Church rejects the claim that December 25 is a “borrowed pagan holiday”:

  • Christianity reached Ethiopia early (Acts 8)

  • Ethiopian Christianity formed independently of Roman political religion

  • Ethiopian theology preserves Semitic–biblical frameworks, not Greco-Roman myth

Spiritual Meaning of the Nativity

In Ethiopian commentary, Christ’s birth means:

  • Humility conquers pride

  • Light conquers chaos

  • The Creator enters His creation

  • Heaven bows to earth

Enoch 62–63 — Light clothes the righteous
Isaiah 9:2 — “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light”

Why the Ethiopian Church Still Honors the Mystery

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church teaches:

“We do not worship the day;
We worship Him who sanctified the day.”

The Nativity is celebrated:

  • With fasting before

  • With chant, light, incense, and vigil

  • As God-with-us (Emmanuel) entering history

Summary

December 25 in Ethiopian theology represents:

  • The triumph of light over darkness

  • The fullness of divine time

  • The fulfillment of Genesis

  • The incarnation of Berhān (Light)

Christ’s birth is not a debated date—it is an eternal mystery manifest in time.

Genesis Chapter 3 and Ezekiel 28 The World Before the Fall

Creation Was Perfect, Ordered, and Without Corruption

Before sin:

  • Nothing died

  • Nothing decayed

  • No sickness or violence existed

  • No predator/prey relationship

  • No hostility between humans and creation

God declared everything:

“very good” (Genesis 1:31)

Meaning flawless, complete, harmonious, filled with peace (shalom).

2. Humanity Shared God’s Glory

Adam and Eve were not naked in a shameful way. The Ethiopian tradition says:

Humans were clothed in light.

Based on:

  • Psalm 8:5 — “crowned with glory and honor”

  • Psalm 104:2 — “He covers Himself with light as with a garment”

Ethiopian commentary teaches:

“The glory of God covered Adam and Eve like a garment.”

After sin this glory departed, and they realized their physical nakedness (Genesis 3:7).

3. Angels and Humans Had Open Fellowship

Before the fall:

  • God walked with Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:8)

  • Eden was a “mountain of God” (Ezekiel 28:13–16)

  • Angels ministered freely

  • The spiritual and natural realms were blended

Ethiopian tradition calls Eden:

“The first holy mountain, where heaven and earth touched.”

Adam and Eve lived in an environment where spiritual beings were not hidden.

4. The Serpent’s Original Form

This is important for understanding Genesis 3.

Before the curse, the serpent:

  • Was not a crawling snake

  • Was upright

  • Was beautiful and radiant

  • Was intelligent (Genesis 3:1 “more subtle”)

The Ethiopian commentary says:

“The serpent walked upright and shone with brightness. After the curse it crawled.”

Satan chose this creature because of its beauty and influence.

5. Communication Was Natural and Multidimensional

Before sin:

Creation was not broken.

  • Humans could communicate spiritually

  • Animals had more awareness

  • Adam named the animals through discernment, not guesswork

  • Eve wasn’t surprised when the serpent spoke — it was a world of pure interaction

The division between the spiritual and physical world came after the fall.

6. No Shame, No Fear, No Evil

Genesis 2:25:

“They were both naked…and were not ashamed.”

Before sin, humanity had:

  • No guilt

  • No insecurity

  • No fear of rejection

  • No fear of God

  • No fear of death

The world was a place of complete innocence.

7. Work Existed — But Without Sweat, Pain, or Hardship

Adam had work before the fall:

“to dress and keep the garden” (Genesis 2:15)

But work was:

  • Joyful

  • Effortless

  • Stress-free

  • Fruitful

Sweat, thorns, and labor-pain came after sin (Genesis 3:16–19).

8. Marriage Was Pure Partnership

Before sin:

  • Adam and Eve were perfectly united

  • No dominance, no conflict

  • Both shared equal dignity (Genesis 1:27)

  • The woman was a “helper equal in strength” (Hebrew ezer kenegdo)

Ethiopian commentary calls Eve:

“The mirror of Adam’s soul.”

Their marriage was free from struggle until the curse introduced conflict (Genesis 3:16).

9. Satan Had Not Yet Usurped Authority

Before the fall:

  • Satan had no rule over earth

  • Humanity had full dominion (Genesis 1:26–28)

  • The world was under God’s perfect order

  • No spiritual warfare existed

  • Satan was present but powerless unless humans agreed with him

After sin, Satan became the “god of this world” (2 Cor. 4:4).

10. Eden Was a Divine Temple

Eden was not just a garden — it was:

A sanctuary, a temple, a cosmic meeting place.

Ethiopian tradition calls Eden:

“The garden of the Lord’s glory.”

The Tree of Life was seen as:

  • A symbol of eternal communion

  • A fore-shadow of Christ and the Cross

  • A place of divine life and incorruption

HOW THE FALL CHANGED EVERYTHING

This is why the fall was catastrophic:

  • Light-garments vanished

  • Fear entered

  • Pain began

  • Communication broke

  • Satan gained authority

  • Nature became hostile

  • The serpent was cursed

  • The spiritual veil closed

  • Death began to work in the human body

  • Humanity was exiled from the divine presence

The world we see now is not the world God originally created.

Genesis 1: 1-26 | The Beginning | Creation | Genesis Bible Study

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

In the beginning God. Who is God The Supreme God - the self existing one, who was here from the very beginning ,who was here when nothing else was. He is the self existing God. In the beginning the self existing God created the heaven and the earth.

Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

The Spirit of God moved over the face of the waters. The Spirit of God is already moving upon the face of the waters meaning that God's Spirit was seen upon all sides of the water. How the Spirit of God is associated with the water where you see the water, there is the Spirit. The earth was without form but the water was present.

The earth was without form, the earth was a desolated place, it was without form, nothing, and the earth was void, meaning, empty, or  to be empty, there was nothing in the beginning, and then God said something

The First Day

Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Stop right here,  and let's examine this. We see God in verse one, we see the Spirit in verse two, and then we see God saying something in verse three, what do we see here? God, the Spirit and then God saying something. God is now speaking. Before we move on, we need to look at, God speaking during creation.

John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Before the Word was made flesh it was with God in the beginning, it was with God, the Spirit in the beginning of creation working together in creation.

In the beginning was the Word, the Word was in the beginning with God. And the Word was God, but this same Word would become flesh in the New Testament. But here in the beginning it is the spoken word of God, the part of God that speaks and things are created, or brought into existence.

Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

And God said, "Let there be light," The first thing God in a world that is without form, a world that is empty, a world that is void, in a world that is only darkness, that word darkness and the first thing call for is the light, the illumination, bright, clear.

When your world is full of darkness, you feel empty, void, misery all around you, no happiness, you need the light. The Bible says that the light shinneth in the darkness and the darkness comprehened it not, in other words, the darkness cannot over come the light, light overcome the darkness.

John 1:5  And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not

This light did not get it's light from the sun or the moon, but God himself is the giver of light. Light represents God's presence. Throughout scripture light  consistently represents God's present truth and life. The Scripture says that God is light and in him is no darkness at all.

Genesis 1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

God divides light from darkness. There is a distinction between the light and the darkness, God separated light from darkness.

Genesis 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

Here in this verse we have a time frame, the evening and the morning were the first day. God moved creation from out of eternity into time.

The Second Day

Genesis 1:6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

Here God begins to set boundaries, he is separating the waters from the waters. What waters? the waters above the firmament and the waters beneath the firmament.

Genesis 1:7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

Genesis 1:8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

The Third Day

Genesis 1:9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

Genesis 1:10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

Here He made a boundary for the dry land and called it earth, and a boundary for the seas. The heavens has its place, the dry land has its place and the seas has its place. No mixing of the boundaries, everything is in its proper place, where it is to be. And God said saw that it was good.

This is the most Important verse in Genesis Chapter one. This verse lays the foundation for the entire Bible. When we look at verse 11, we will understand God's intent for His creation, we will understand why we were created, why we are here and where we are going.

we will understand God's original intent for His creation in the beginning. We will understand His mind for His creation.  Genesis chapter 11 reads:

Genesis 1:11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

We see in this verse that God brought fourth grass, the herb yielding seed, the fruit tree yielding fruit. We see that God created the seed to reproduce after its kind. The herb yielding seed, the fruit tree yielding fruit, all reproduce after its own kind. The herbs will not reproduce fruit, and the fruit will not reproduce herbs.

Notice that the seed reproduces after HIS kind. Why HIS kind? Because males produces the seed. The male produce his seed, the female carries the seed. In the beginning, God created the seed to reproduce after his kind.  Let's see this in the New Testament

Genesis 1:12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

And God saw that it was good that the seed reproduces after his kind.

Genesis 1:13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

The Fourth Day

Genesis 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

Genesis 1:15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

Genesis 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule
the night: he made the stars also.

Genesis 1:17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

Genesis 1:18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

The Fifth Day

Genesis 1:20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life,
and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

Genesis 1:21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

Genesis 1:23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day

On the fifth day, all moving creatures in the waters, and fowls in the sky after his kind.

The Sixth Day

Genesis 1:24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and
creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

Genesis 1:25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
The law of the seed is that every living creature, cattle and creeping thing, beast are brought forth, how? after his kind.

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

In this verse, it says, "Let us make man," Who is the "Let Us,"? The let us here is the same God, Spirit and Word in Genesis 1:1-3. God made the man in their image, after their likeness.

Man was made with all the fulness of the God. And then God said, "Let them have dominion- God gave them dominion to rule over the fish of the sea, the fowl of the air, over the cattle, over all the earth, and over every creepth thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Man was given rule over every thing upon the earth, except man. man was made in God's image, God did not give the man dominion over man.
Man was made in God's image, after God's likeness, God did not create the man to be subjugated to man.

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

God created them male and female, in the image of God created he them. The male and the female made in the in God's own image.

Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish
the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

And God pronounced His blessing upon them saying, " Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it," the man and the woman are told to be fruitful.

To be fruitful means to bear fruit, bring forth (fruit), cause to be, make) fruitful, grow, increase. This is the same law of the seed as seen in Genesis 1:11, where God made the fruit with it's seed inside to be able to reproduce after his kind. Here God tells the man and female to be fruitful, multiple and replenish, and fill the earth with male and female made after the image and the likeness of their creator.

It was God's original intent in the beginning to have the earth filled with males and females created in the image and likeness of God. They were to rule the earth, be fruitful and multiply upon the earth, and replenish. The word "replenish," means to fill, be full. The male and the female were to continuously  fill the earth with the image of God. This was the mind of God in the beginning.

Genesis 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

Genesis 1:30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

Genesis 1:31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
