 Luke 10:18 needs to be read inside the immediate context of Luke 10:1–20 . Jesus had sent the seventy disciples out with authority.  When they returned, they were amazed that demonic powers submitted to them. “Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.” — Luke 10:17 Jesus immediately answered: “I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.” — Luke 10:18  Jesus is not randomly interrupting the conversation to tell the disciples how Satan originally became evil. He is responding directly to their report that demons were being subjected through His authority . What does “I beheld” mean? The Greek is: ἐθεώρουν τὸν Σατανᾶν... etheōroun ton Satanan... The verb etheōroun comes from theōreō , meaning to behold, observe, watch, or perceive . Significantly, it is in the imperfect tense .  The Binding of Satan — Revelation 20:1–10 Revelation 20 presents one of Scripture’s clearest pictures of  the limitation, defeat, and final  judgment of Satan .   Satan is bound , later released , and finally cast into the lake of fire . The central message is not the greatness of Satan’s power, but the absolute sovereignty of God over him.  An Angel Descends With Authority — Revelation 20:1 John sees an angel descending from heaven carrying the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain . The imagery is important. Satan does not possess the key. The authority to open and close the abyss belongs to heaven. Even the adversary's confinement operates under divine authority. This agrees with Revelation 1:18, where Christ declares that He possesses the keys of death and Hades. The chain should therefore be understood first as a picture of divinely imposed restraint .
