Genesis 6:1–4 “The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took wives of all which they chose… There were giants (Nephilim) in the earth in those days…” The key phrase is “sons of God” (Hebrew: bene ha’elohim ). So the real question is:  Does bene ha’elohim mean angels? Or does it mean human descendants of Seth? Or royal rulers? There are three major interpretations.  The Angelic View (Ancient Jewish Interpretation) This was the dominant view in ancient Judaism. It is found in: 1 Enoch Book of Jubilees Dead Sea Scrolls Why this view argues for angels:  A. “Sons of God” in the Hebrew Bible The phrase bene ha’elohim appears elsewhere: Job 1:6 Job 2:1 Job 38:7 In Job, it clearly refers to heavenly beings presenting themselves before God. It never clearly refers to humans in the Old Testament using that exact phrase. Spellings differ considerably among manuscripts and English translations. Names commonly represented include: Shemihazah /Semjaza, Artaqifa, Armen , Kokabel , Turael, Rumjal, Danjal, Neqael, Baraqel, Azazel, Armaros , Batriel, Basasael, Ananel, Turel, Simapesiel, Yetarel, Tumael, Turel, Rumael, and Azazel. This tradition parallels 1 Enoch 6 , where the Watchers descend and bind themselves together by an oath. 2.    Tamiel is one of the names associated with the fallen Watchers in the ancient 1 Enoch tradition . His name appears in different forms across manuscripts and translations, including Tamiel, Tâmêl, and related spellings . Because the surviving textual traditions vary, we need to be especially careful about assigning Tamiel a specific forbidden teaching. What does 1 Enoch actually say? In 1 Enoch 6 , Tamiel appears in lists of the leaders or chiefs connected with the two hundred Watchers who descended in the days of Jared. According to the narrative, these Watchers gathered upon Mount Hermon , agreed together by oath to carry out their decision, took human wives, and became part of the events that 1 Enoch connects with the corruption preceding the Flood.
