Genesis 1:14–16 — Lights in the Firmament of Heaven “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.” — Genesis 1:14–16 (KJV) And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. Genesis 1:14–16 begins the fourth day of creation . God now appoints lights in the firmament of heaven and gives them specific functions: they are to divide day from night, give light upon the earth, and mark signs, seasons, days, and years . Genesis 1:17–19 — God Set Them in the Firmament of Heaven “And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,  And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.  And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.” — Genesis 1:17–19 (KJV) Genesis 1:17–19 completes the fourth day of creation . Verses 14–16 told us that God made the greater light, the lesser light, and the stars. Verses 17–19 now emphasize where God placed them, why He placed them there, and the authority under which they function. Three purposes are repeated,  to give light upon the earth,  to rule over the day and the night, and to divide the light from the darkness.  Nothing about their position or function is accidental.
