Expounding Genesis 17:1–6 (KJV)
Genesis 17:1 — Walk Before Me, and Be Thou Perfect
God reveals Himself to Abram as the Almighty God (El Shaddai) and commands him to walk before Him and be perfect. This command calls Abram to live faithfully, wholeheartedly, and in obedience before the Lord. God's covenant relationship requires a life of devotion and integrity.
Genesis 17:2 — I Will Make My Covenant
God declares that He will establish His covenant with Abram and multiply him exceedingly. The fulfillment of this promise rests upon God's faithfulness and power, not upon Abraham's natural ability.
Genesis 17:3 — Abram Fell on His Face
Abram responds to God's presence with reverence and humility. His posture demonstrates submission before the Almighty. Before receiving further revelation concerning the covenant, Abram bows in worship.
Genesis 17:4 — A Father of Many Nations
God declares that Abram will become the father of many nations. The promise extends beyond one family or generation. Through Abraham, nations and peoples would arise, revealing the far-reaching purpose of God's covenant.
Genesis 17:5 — From Abram to Abraham
God changes Abram's name to Abraham, declaring, "for a father of many nations have I made thee."
The change of name signifies God's declared purpose for Abraham's life. Although the full manifestation of the promise was yet to come, God speaks of it with certainty.
Genesis 17:6 — Kings Shall Come Out of Thee
God promises Abraham extraordinary fruitfulness:
"And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee." — Genesis 17:6 (KJV)
This promise establishes that Abraham's descendants would include nations and royal lineages. Through Isaac and Jacob would come the kings of Israel, including David and Solomon. Ultimately, Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah and Son of David, would come through Abraham's lineage (Matthew 1:1).
