John 14:16 — Another Comforter

“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;” — John 14:16, KJV

Jesus spoke these words to His disciples as He prepared them for His departure. Although He would no longer remain with them in the same physical manner, He would not leave them without divine help and presence.

Jesus promised “another Comforter.” The Greek word translated Comforter, paraklētos, describes one called alongside to help, advocate, strengthen, encourage, and assist. The word “another” is significant: Jesus promises another divine Helper who would continue His work among His disciples—the Holy Ghost, identified explicitly in John 14:26.

Jesus also says, “that he may abide with you for ever.” Under the New Covenant, the Holy Spirit would not merely come alongside God's people for a temporary assignment. Jesus explains in the following verse:

“...for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” — John 14:17, KJV

The Holy Spirit would teach them, bring Christ's words to their remembrance (John 14:26), testify concerning Christ (John 15:26), and guide them into truth (John 16:13).

Notice also the relationship revealed in the verse: the Son prays to the Father, the Father gives the Comforter, and the Comforter abides with Christ's people. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all present in Jesus' promise.

Personal Application

Jesus did not intend His followers to live the Christian life depending solely upon human wisdom, strength, or ability. God has given the Holy Spirit to be with His people.

When you need direction, comfort, strength, or understanding, remember Christ's promise: you have not been left alone.

The Holy Spirit does not draw attention away from Christ. He teaches us Christ's words, bears witness of Christ, and leads us into truth.

The Father gave the Comforter.
The Son made the promise.
The Holy Spirit abides with God's people.
