Matthew 13 — The Parable of the Sower
The Sower — The Scattering of the Seed
Matthew 13:25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.
In verse 25, we now learn that the sower of the good seed is a male, it states, 'his enemy," only males produces seed after his kind (Genesis 1:11). But now we see another sower, and this sower is an enemy of the good seed sower. This enemy is sowing seed in the field also, but this sower is not sowing good seed, he is sowing tares. What are tares? The word tares is translated zizania, or darnel, a weed that can that is toxic, resembling the wheat during its early growth.
The resemblance is significant because farmers cannot easily tell the two seeds apart in its early stage of growth.
Matthew 13:26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.
Matthew 13:27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?
Matthew 13:28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
Matthew 13:29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
Matthew 13:30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.The good seed and the seed of the tares grow together in the field (world). It is not for us to pluck up the tares but we are to leave them alone and let them grow together. The servants were instructed to leave them alone, and not pluck them up just yet, but to leave them until the harvest, the end of the world. You may ask why? I believe because, God wants the tares to have the opportunity to come to Christ, have a change of heart, allow God to transform their lives and accept the salvation of Jesus Christ before the end of the world.
Jesus Explains the Parable of the tares of the Field
Matthew 13:36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.
Matthew 13:37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;
The sower who sows the good seed is the Son of man. Once again, notice it a man, the man sows the seed. This aligns with Genesis chapter 1:11, that the seed reproduces after his kind
Matthew 13:38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
The good seed are the children of the kingdom, the children are the offspring of the seed being sown. Children that are made in the image, likeness, and kind of the sower who sowed them. The tares are the children of the wicked, and they are also produced in the image, likeness, and kind of the one who sowed them. Here we see two seeds in the earth. This parable only reveals two types of seed sown in the earth, the good seed and the seed of the wicked one.
Matthew 13:39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
The devil has seed. This verse reveals to us who the enemy is that sowed the tars among the wheat, the devil. The devil is the enemy that is sown in among the tares.
Matthew 13:40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.
Matthew 13:41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
Matthew 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 13:43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
We have learned that there are two seeds sown in the world, the good seed and the tares. The one who sows the good seed in his field is the Son of man. We learned that the Son of man has an enemy and his enemy also has sown seeds in the field called tares.
We saw that the angels were instructed to let these tow seeds grow together, and not pluck out the tares while they are growing among the wheat, because in doing so they may pluck up the good wheat along with the tares. I believe that it is not God's desire to pluck up the tares just yet, because there is still time to save some of the tares from the fire at the end of the world.
