Genesis Chapter 6 - The Sons of God | Fallen Angels

 Shemihazah

Shemihazah (also spelled Semjaza / Shemyaza) is known as the leader of the Watchers — a group of angels who descended to earth before the Flood. 

His story is preserved mainly in the Book of 1 Enoch, especially chapters 6–16.

Let’s walk through what he did and why it mattered.

 He Led the Rebellion of the Watchers

According to 1 Enoch 6:

• Shemihazah was chief over 200 angels called Watchers.

• They looked upon the daughters of men and desired them.

• The other angels feared punishment.

• Shemihazah made them swear an oath together on Mount Hermon so none would turn back.

This oath bound them into collective rebellion.

He was not merely tempted — he organized the transgression.

He Took a Human Wife

After descending to earth:

• The Watchers took wives from human women.

• They cohabited with them.

• Their unions produced the Nephilim (giants).

The Nephilim became violent, corrupt, and destructive.

This connects directly with Genesis 6:1–4, where “sons of God” take wives from the daughters of men.

 He Introduced Forbidden Knowledge

Though another Watcher named Azazel is especially associated with corrupt teachings, the group under Shemihazah taught humanity:

• Sorcery and enchantments

• Astrology and celestial secrets

• Cutting of roots and occult arts

This knowledge was considered unlawful because it was given prematurely and corrupted humanity’s moral structure.

 He Was Judged and Bound

God sent archangels to judge the Watchers.

In 1 Enoch 10:

• The Watchers were bound in darkness.

• They were imprisoned in the earth until final judgment.

• Their giant offspring were destroyed.

Shemihazah’s punishment was severe because he was the leader.

Theological Meaning

Shemihazah represents:

• Spiritual rebellion

• Abuse of authority

• Crossing divine boundaries

• Mixture of heavenly and earthly realms

The issue was not merely marriage — it was order violation. The heavenly realm invaded the human realm in defiance of divine structure.

Connection to the Flood

The corruption caused by the Watchers and Nephilim is presented in 1 Enoch as a primary reason for the Flood in Genesis 6.

The earth became filled with:

• Violence

• Bloodshed

• Moral distortion

Thus, judgment came.

 Was bound and imprisoned awaiting judgment

Genesis chapter 6 does not name Shemihazah by name, it only states, The Sons of God," 1 Enoch gives a more accurate account about Shemihazah.
