Genesis Chapter 6 - In His Image Bible Study

In Genesis Chapter six, this is where heaven, earth, angels, humans, judgment, and mercy all
collide.

Corruption of Creation, the Fall of the Watchers, and the Mercy of Noah.

Genesis chapter explains Why the flood had to happen.

It answers:

  • What went wrong with humanity?
  • What role did heavenly being play?
  • Why was evil suddenly everywhere?
  • Why was Noah different?
This chapter shows the collapse of God's created order.

"SONS OF GOD AND THE DAUGHTERS OF MEN

Who are the sons of God? They are fallen angels (Watchers) - not human men.  They descended from heaven and rebelled.

  • They left their heavenly station -  They broke divine order
  • They took human wives  -  They mixed realms God separated
  • Children were born - The Nephilims
  • They taught forbidden knowledge - They accelerated evil

Questions

  1. Why do you think God separated heavenly beings and human in the first place?_____________________________________________________
  2. What does this story show about the danger of stepping outside God's boundaries?   _________________________________________________________________
  3. How is this rebellion different from normal human sin?

THE NEPHILIM
They were giants in structure, violent, consumed human resources, brought terror, and destroyed the balance of creation. They were not fully human.

Human                          Angel                       Nephilim
Earthly                            Heavenly                      Hybrid
Mortal                             Spirit beings               Abnormal beings
Created in order           Created in order        Born in rebellion

Questions

1. Why would hybrid beings be spiritual unstable?
2. How might their existence have affected human society?
3. Why would their presence make the Flood necessary?

PART 3 - WHAT THE WATCHERS TAUGHT
The Watchers corrupted humanity by teaching:

 Fallen Angel                                               Forbidden Knowledge

Azazel                                                              Weapons, warfare
Others                                                              Sorcery, astrology misuse, charms
Others                                                              Seduction, cosmetics manipulation

Knowledge itself wasn't evil - but misused knowledge accelerated corruption.

Questions

1. How can knowledge become dangerous without wisdom from God?
2. What modern examples resemble "forbidden knowledge" being misused?
3. Why do you think violence increased so rapidly after this?

PART 4 - WHAT HAPPENED WHEN THE NEPHILIM DIED?

This is crucial. The Nephilim died in the flood, but:
Their spirits remained on earth.
These spirits:
  • Cannot return to heaven ( not fully angelic)
  • Cannot have bodies (not fully human)
  • Wander the earth
  • Seek embodiment
  • Afflict humans

         THESE ARE DEMONS

Fallen Angels
(Watchers)                                 Demons

Original rebels                               Spirits of dead Nephilim
Bound in Judgment                       Romans the earth
Await final judgment                     Causes oppression, deception

Questions

1. Why would disembodied spirits seek to inhibit people?
2. How does this explain spiritual oppression in the world?
3. Why are demons restless?

PART 5 - DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FALLEN ANGELS & DEMONS

Spiritual Meaning
This was not normal sin - this was cosmic rebellion. Creation's boundaries were violated.

God's Design                                                                                 What Happened
Heaven separated from earth                                                   Angels crossed realms
Humanity under God                                                                 Humanity influenced by fallen spirits
Knowledge from God                                                                  Forbidden knowledge spread

MY SPIRIT SHALL NOT ALWAYS STRIVE.......
God sets a limit 120 years
  • Countdown to the flood
  • Limit to human lifespan
  • God withdraws sustaining grace
Key point:
Grace has a boundary when rebellion is present.

THE HEART OF HUMANITY
Every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

This is a diagnosis of total moral collapse.

Area                                                       Corruption
Thoughts                                                Evil
Intentions                                              Evil
Continuous                                         No pause

Sin moved from acts -nature

IT GRIEVED HIM TO HIS HEART
This is one of the most emotional verses in Scripture. God is not cold. He feels, sorrow, pain, relational heartbreak.  This shows sin is not just lawbreaking, it is heartbreaking to God.

Workbook Reflection:
How does seeing God grieved change how we view sin?

WHY JUDGMENT WAS NECESSARY
