The Solar System is the collection of everything that is held
together by the gravity of the Sun.

The Sun is the center, and everything else — planets, moons, asteroids, comets, dust — orbits around it.

The word “solar” comes from sol, meaning Sun.

WHAT MAKES UP THE SOLAR SYSTEM?

1. The Sun (The Star at the Center)

  • Contains 99.86% of all the mass in the solar system

  • Made mostly of hydrogen and helium

  • Source of heat, light, energy, and life for Earth

2. The 8 Planets (In Order)

INNER / TERRESTRIAL PLANETS

Small rocks that can enter Earth’s atmosphere.
