Zephaniah 3:17 — He Will Rest in His Love

“The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.” — Zephaniah 3:17

Zephaniah 3:17 presents a beautiful picture of God’s love for His people after judgment and restoration. Earlier in the chapter, God confronts rebellion and sin, but the chapter does not end with judgment. It moves toward restoration, salvation, joy, and the presence of God among His people.

The words “the LORD thy God in the midst of thee” show that God is not pictured as distant. He is present among His restored people. He is also described as mighty and able to save. His love is therefore not powerless affection—it is the love of the God who has the power to deliver.

The expression “he will rest in his love” gives the picture of a settled, quiet, steadfast love. God's love is not portrayed as restless or uncertain. He rejoices over His people and even “joy[s] over thee with singing.”
