Romans 1:3 - The Hidden Spiritual and Heavenly Blessings | Speak His Word Only
“Concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was made of the seed of David according to the flesh.”
At first glance, the verse speaks of earth (David, flesh, lineage).
But Ethiopian theology teaches that this verse is the doorway to heavenly blessing, not a limitation to the natural realm.
1. The Great Ethiopian Mystery:
He took flesh to release heavenly inheritance
In Ethiopian teaching, Christ’s taking flesh is not the end — it is the means.
Why does Paul emphasize “according to the flesh”?
Because what Christ assumes in the flesh,
He raises into the heavens.
What is not assumed is not healed.
(A principle preserved strongly in Ethiopian theology)
By taking:
David’s seed
Human nature
Mortal flesh
Christ qualifies humanity to receive spiritual blessings that were once inaccessible.
2. The Heavenly Blessing Hidden in “Seed of David”
David is not mentioned only for kingship.
In Ethiopian interpretation, David represents:
The fallen but chosen humanity
The royal calling lost in Adam
The throne forfeited in Eden
Thus:
Adam lost dominion in the garden (earth).
Christ restores dominion through David (kingly line).
The blessing is no longer merely earthly — it is heavenly restoration.
Christ reconnects heaven and earth through human flesh.
3. Flesh as the Gateway to Heavenly Places
Ethiopian theology teaches something very bold:
He did not become flesh to remain on earth,
but to carry flesh into the heavens.
This is the spiritual blessing Paul is pointing toward.
Because Christ:
Took flesh
Lived obediently
Died without sin
Rose bodily
Ascended bodily
Humanity is now represented in heaven.
This is the first and greatest spiritual blessing in Christ:
human nature enthroned at the right hand of God.
4. Romans 1:3 as the Foundation of “Heavenly Places”
Though Paul later writes explicitly in Ephesians about “spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ”,
Ethiopian tradition sees Romans 1:3 as the seed of that revelation.
Because:
Without incarnation → no ascension
Without flesh → no heavenly inheritance
Without David’s seed → no legal restoration
Romans 1:3 explains how believers gain access to heavenly blessing.
5. The Ethiopian Understanding of Spiritual Blessing
A spiritual blessing is not emotion or prosperity.
In Ethiopian theology, spiritual blessing means:
Restored Sonship
What Adam lost, Christ restores.
Access to the heavenly sanctuary
Humanity can stand before God again.
Participation in divine life
Not by nature, but by grace.
Union, not distance
God does not bless from afar; He unites.
All of this is possible because Christ came in the flesh.
6. “According to the Flesh” — But Not Limited to the Flesh
This phrase sets up a divine contrast:
According to the flesh → humility
According to the Spirit → glory (Romans 1:4)
Ethiopian teaching says:
The flesh is the ladder; the heavens are the destination.
Christ descends in the flesh
so believers may ascend in the Spirit.
This is the exchange of blessing:
He takes mortality
We receive immortality
He takes weakness
We receive glory
He takes earth
We receive heaven
7. The Blessing Is “In Christ,” Not Outside Him
Ethiopian theology strongly emphasizes union.
The blessing is not given:
By law alone
By lineage alone
By effort alone
It is given in Christ because:
He carries humanity within Himself.
Where He goes, humanity may follow.
What He inherits, believers share.
The blessing is not separate from the Person.
8. Spiritual Application (Ethiopian Lens)
Romans 1:3 teaches believers:
Your flesh is not rejected; it is redeemable.
Your prayers rise because Christ’s flesh already ascended.
Your suffering is not wasted; it is joined to His obedience.
Your destiny is not earthbound; it is heaven-directed.
Ethiopian Summary Statement
The Son entered the seed of David,
so the sons of Adam might enter the heavens.
He took flesh, not to bless the flesh alone,
but to carry humanity into eternal glory.
All spiritual and heavenly blessing flows
through the flesh He assumed and glorified.
