Genesis chapter 6 Bible Study -Sariel The Falen Watcher Associated with the Course of the Moon

Sariel is an especially interesting name because the Enochic tradition contains some complexity around him. His name appears in variant forms such as Sariel, Saraqael, Saraqiel, and Sarakiel, and different manuscripts and translations do not always present these names in exactly the same way.

In the Watcher-teaching list of 1 Enoch 8:3, a figure commonly rendered Sariel is associated with teaching humanity “the course of the moon.” Some translations phrase this slightly differently, but the central idea concerns knowledge of the moon's movements.

The text does not say that Sariel created or controlled the moon. Rather, he possessed knowledge concerning its appointed movement within God's creation.

What does “the course of the moon” mean?

1 Enoch 8 does not provide a detailed explanation of what Sariel taught. We therefore should not automatically turn the phrase into astrology, magic, or moon worship.

In the wider astronomical sections of 1 Enoch, however, considerable attention is given to the moon's:

• movement through the heavens,

• waxing and waning,

• changing illumination,

• months,

• relationship to the calendar,

• and appointed heavenly courses.

Those later teachings are primarily revealed to Enoch through Uriel, so they should not all automatically be attributed to Sariel.

The important idea is ordered movement.

The moon did not wander through heaven independently. It belonged to an established order created by God.

Genesis 1:16 says:

“And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night.”

Thus, the biblical worldview places the moon firmly beneath the authority of the Creator.

Sariel and the boundary of knowledge

This connects Sariel with the larger message of the Watcher account.

The Watchers possessed knowledge unavailable to ordinary humanity. Their transgression involved not merely possessing knowledge but crossing their appointed boundary and revealing heavenly mysteries improperly.

The pattern becomes clearer when we place these Watchers together:

Kokabiel — constellations
Baraqiel — astrology
Ezeqeel — knowledge of the clouds
Araqiel — signs of the earth
Shamsiel — signs of the sun
Sariel — course of the moon

Together, they represent knowledge extending across earth and heaven—from terrestrial signs to clouds, stars, sun, and moon.

An important point about Sariel

There is another Sariel/Saraqael tradition within 1 Enoch itself.

In 1 Enoch 20, Saraqael appears among the holy angels, rather than among the rebellious Watchers, and is given responsibility concerning spirits who sin.

Because the surviving Enoch manuscripts contain variations in spelling and angelic names, scholars do not simply assume that every appearance of Sariel/Saraqael must refer to precisely the same figure.

In the Watcher-teaching tradition of 1 Enoch 8, Sariel is associated with revealing the course of the moon. This represents knowledge concerning the ordered movements of God's heavenly creation being disclosed to humanity within the larger rebellion of the Watchers.

That preserves what the ancient text actually says without claiming more than the evidence allows.

And as with the other named Watchers, Genesis 6 does not name Sariel or say that a Watcher taught the course of the moon. Those details come from the expanded Enochic tradition, not directly from Genesis.
