John 4:13 - Whosoever Drink of This Water Shall Thirst Again | Speak His Word Only

“Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:” — John 4:13, KJV

Jesus spoke these words to the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. She was thinking about ordinary water, but Jesus used physical thirst to reveal a much deeper spiritual thirst.

“Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again.” Natural water satisfies only temporarily. Eventually, thirst returns. In the same way, the things of this world can provide temporary satisfaction but cannot permanently satisfy the deepest needs of the human soul.

Jesus continues in verse 14:

“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst...”

The contrast is between what the world temporarily supplies and what Christ permanently gives. The woman came to the well seeking water, but Jesus revealed that she needed something no earthly well could provide.

The “living water” points to the spiritual life Christ gives. Later, John explains the imagery more explicitly when Jesus speaks of “rivers of living water” and John adds, “this spake he of the Spirit” (John 7:38–39).

Personal Application

We can repeatedly return to earthly “wells”—possessions, relationships, accomplishments, recognition, entertainment, or other temporary satisfactions—only to discover that we thirst again.

Jesus invites us to recognize the difference between temporary satisfaction and spiritual life.

The world can give us something to drink, but eventually we thirst again. Christ gives living water that reaches the deepest need of the soul.

The question is worth asking:

What well have I been returning to, expecting it to satisfy a thirst that only Christ can satisfy?
