Romans 6:23 — The Wages of Sin and the Gift of God | Bible Prayer Journal

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” — Romans 6:23 (KJV)

Sin • Death • Grace • Eternal Life • Gift of God • Jesus Christ • New Life

Introduction

Romans 6:23 presents one of Scripture's clearest contrasts: what sin pays and what God gives.

Paul describes death as the wages of sin. Wages are something earned as the result of service. Throughout Romans 6, Paul pictures sin as a cruel master that promises freedom but ultimately produces bondage and death.

Then one word changes the direction of the verse:

“But.”

Sin pays wages, but God gives a gift.

Eternal life cannot be earned as a wage for good behavior. It is God's gracious gift through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Expository Insight

“For the Wages”

The Greek word opsōnion refers to wages or compensation.

The imagery is powerful.

A worker receives wages because something has been earned. Paul applies that principle to sin:

Sin has a payday.

Its ultimate payment is death.

“Of Sin”

Sin is more than making occasional mistakes. Biblically, sin includes rebellion against God, violation of His righteous standard, and falling short of His glory.

Romans 6 also describes sin as a master seeking dominion.

Paul has already commanded:

“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body.” — Romans 6:12

The question is therefore not merely:

“Have I committed sins?”

It is also:

“Whom am I allowing to rule my life?”

“Is Death”

Sin produces separation, corruption, destruction, and ultimately death.

This reaches back to God's warning in Genesis and runs throughout Scripture.

Sin may temporarily promise:

Pleasure.

Freedom.

Control.

Satisfaction.

But its final wages are entirely different from what it promises.

Sin promises life while producing death.

“But”

This small word introduces the gospel contrast.

If Romans 6:23 ended with:

“The wages of sin is death,”

humanity would be left without hope.

But God intervenes.

Sin pays.
But God gives.

“The Gift of God”

Paul deliberately contrasts wages with gift.

The Greek word charisma refers to a gracious gift—something bestowed by grace.

Eternal life is not presented as payment for religious achievement.

It is God's gift.

We cannot boast about earning something that God graciously gives.

“Is Eternal Life”

Eternal life includes more than endless existence.

It is life found in relationship with God through Christ, beginning in the believer's present relationship with Him and reaching its fullness in the age to come.

Jesus said:

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” — John 17:3

Eternal life is inseparably connected with knowing God through Jesus Christ.

“Through Jesus Christ”

The gift has a specific source and mediator:

Jesus Christ.

Paul does not say eternal life comes through:

Good works.

Religious accomplishments.

Family heritage.

Human morality.

Personal achievement.

It comes through Jesus Christ.

Christ stands at the center of God's saving work.

“Our Lord”

Paul ends with lordship:

Jesus Christ our Lord.

The One through whom we receive eternal life is also the One to whom we belong.

Romans 6 is therefore not merely about escaping death.

It is about changing masters.

Once enslaved to sin.

Now belonging to God.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for showing me both the seriousness of sin and the greatness of Your grace.

Your Word declares that the wages of sin is death, but it does not leave me without hope.

Thank You for the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Search my heart and reveal anything I have allowed to remain under the influence of sin. Give me genuine repentance and strength to turn away from everything that dishonors You.

Keep me from treating sin lightly.

At the same time, keep me from believing that I can earn Your gift through my own goodness.

I depend upon Your grace.

Thank You for Jesus Christ—His death, resurrection, mercy, and saving work.

Let the eternal life You have given me become visible in the way I live.

May sin no longer reign over me. Teach me to present myself to You and walk daily in obedience to Jesus Christ my Lord.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Application

Today I will examine whether there is an area where I have been excusing sin rather than confronting it. I will confess it before God, turn from it, and remember that my new life is found through Jesus Christ—not through my own strength.
