Romans 6:4 — Walking in Newness of Life | Bible Prayer Journal

“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” — Romans 6:4 (KJV)

Union With Christ • Baptism • Death to Sin • Resurrection • Transformation • Newness of Life

Introduction

Romans 6:4 teaches that salvation in Christ is more than forgiveness of past sins—it introduces the believer to an entirely new manner of life.

Paul connects baptism with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Baptism visibly portrays the believer's identification with Christ: the old life dominated by sin is no longer to rule, and the believer is called to walk according to the new life God has provided.

Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father. Likewise, those united with Christ are called to “walk in newness of life.”

Expository Insight

“Therefore we are buried with Him”

Burial confirms that death has occurred. Paul uses this imagery to emphasize the believer's identification with the death of Christ.

Romans 6 does not teach that Christians become incapable of sin. Rather, sin's former mastery has been decisively challenged through union with Christ.

The believer should no longer regard sin as his or her rightful master.

“By baptism into death”

Baptism publicly identifies the believer with Jesus Christ.

It portrays:

Death with Christ → Burial with Christ → Resurrection life with Christ

The emphasis is not merely upon entering water but upon the spiritual reality baptism signifies—belonging to Christ and participating in the new life associated with Him.

“Like as Christ was raised up from the dead”

Christian transformation rests upon an historical foundation:

Jesus Christ was raised from the dead.

Paul's argument is built upon Christ's resurrection. Because Christ lives, the believer's life should no longer remain characterized by the dominion of the old life.

“By the glory of the Father”

The resurrection demonstrates the Father's glorious power.

The same God who raised Christ calls His people to live transformed lives.

Therefore, Christian holiness is not simply human self-improvement. It flows from God's saving work and the believer's new relationship with Christ.

“We Also Should Walk”

The Greek concept of walking describes one's manner of living.

Paul is not speaking about a single spiritual experience. He is describing a daily lifestyle.

How I speak.

How I think.

How I respond.

How I treat people.

How I handle temptation.

How I use my time.

How I serve God.

My new identity in Christ should increasingly produce a new way of living.

“In Newness of Life”

The Greek word kainotēs communicates newness—a fresh quality or condition.

Paul does not merely say:

“Improve the old life.”

He says:

Walk in newness of life.

God is producing something different in those who belong to Christ.

Old patterns do not have to determine today's decisions.

The Old Life and the New Walk

What belongs to the old life?

What is God asking me to leave behind?

What should characterize my new life in Christ?

Where do I need resurrection power in my daily walk?

Heart Examination

Is there a sinful habit I have allowed to remain comfortable in my life?

Am I living according to who I was, or according to who I am becoming in Christ?

What area of my thinking needs renewal?

What practical change can I make today?

My Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Jesus Christ, who died for my sins and was raised from the dead by Your glory.

Thank You that through Christ I am not condemned to remain bound to the patterns of my former life.

Teach me what it means to walk in newness of life.

Help me put away attitudes, habits, desires, and behaviors that belong to the old way of living. When temptation comes, remind me that sin is not my rightful master.

Renew my mind through Your Word. Strengthen me by Your Spirit so that my conduct agrees with the new life You have given me.

Let the resurrection of Jesus Christ affect more than what I believe. Let it transform how I live.

May my words, decisions, relationships, thoughts, and conduct testify that I belong to Christ.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Personal Application

Today I will identify one old pattern that does not agree with my new life in Christ and intentionally replace it with an action that reflects obedience to God.

The old pattern I am putting away:

The new response I will practice:

Key Truth

Because Christ was raised from the dead, believers are called not merely to leave the old life behind but to actively walk in the new life God has given them in Christ.
