Luke 1:32 — He Shall Be Great: Jesus, the Son of the Highest | Bible Prayer Journal

“He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall
give unto him the throne of his father David.” — Luke 1:32 (KJV)

Jesus Christ • Son of the Highest • Davidic Covenant • Kingship • Kingdom of God • God's Promise

Introduction

Luke 1:32 is part of the angel Gabriel's announcement to Mary concerning the child she would miraculously conceive. Gabriel does not merely announce the birth of a remarkable child. He identifies Jesus in terms of His greatness, divine Sonship, Davidic kingship, and promised Kingdom.

The verse reaches backward to God's covenant with David and forward to the everlasting reign of Christ. What God promised generations earlier was moving toward fulfillment in Jesus.

This makes Luke 1:32 a powerful passage for prayer: God remembers His promises, Christ is King, and His Kingdom rests upon God's faithfulness.

Expository Insight

“He Shall Be Great”

Jesus would not merely become great because people eventually recognized Him.

His greatness belongs to who He is.

Earlier in Luke 1:15, John the Baptist is described as being “great in the sight of the Lord.” But Jesus is simply declared:

“He shall be great.”

His greatness surpasses human position, reputation, and earthly authority.

“Shall Be Called the Son of the Highest”

Highest — Hypsistos

The Greek word Hypsistos means:

Highest • Most High • Supreme

“The Highest” is a title for God.

Jesus being called “the Son of the Highest” identifies His unique relationship with the Father.

Luke 1:35 develops this further when Gabriel declares:

“Therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”

Jesus' identity cannot be separated from His mission.

The promised King is the Son of God.

“The Lord God Shall Give Unto Him”

The throne is given by God.

Jesus' kingship is therefore not established by:

Human elections.

Political alliances.

Military conquest.

Public popularity.

The Father Himself establishes the Son's royal authority.

God's Kingdom rests upon God's purpose and promise.

“The Throne of His Father David”

This statement reaches directly back to God's covenant with David.

God promised David:

“I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.” — 2 Samuel 7:13

Jesus entered history through David's royal lineage and is presented as the promised Davidic Messiah.

The title “father David” refers to David as Jesus' ancestor according to His human lineage.

Thus Luke connects:

David → Covenant → Promised King → Jesus Christ

The Kingdom Connection

Luke 1:32 cannot be separated from verse 33:

“And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”

Jesus was born to reign.

His Kingdom is not temporary.

His authority does not expire.

His throne will not be succeeded by another king.

His Kingdom has no end.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Jesus Christ, the Son of the Highest and the promised King.

You remembered the covenant You made with David and fulfilled Your purpose according to Your appointed time.

Teach me to trust Your promises even when I must wait to see their fulfillment.

Jesus, reign over my heart.

Let Your authority govern my thoughts, words, choices, relationships, and desires. Expose every area where I want Your salvation but resist Your rule.

I confess that You are greater than every earthly authority and every circumstance I face.

Help me seek Your Kingdom first and live faithfully under Your lordship.

May my life testify that Jesus Christ is King, the Son of the Highest, and that His Kingdom shall have no end.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
