His True Love - Jesus Christ the Same Yesterday, Today, and Forever

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”

Hebrews 13:8 is a short verse containing an enormous truth: Jesus Christ is unchanging.

Our circumstances change. Generations change. Human opinions change. Governments, cultures, traditions, relationships, and seasons of life change. Yet Scripture directs our attention away from everything temporary and places it upon the One who remains the same:

Jesus Christ.

He was faithful yesterday.
He is faithful today.
He remains faithful forever.

The Context of Hebrews 13:8

Hebrews 13:8 should not be separated from the verses surrounding it.

Hebrews 13:7 tells believers:

“Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.”

Then comes the declaration:

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”

Immediately afterward, Hebrews 13:9 warns:

“Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines.”

The placement is significant.

Human teachers come and go, but Jesus Christ remains the same.

Doctrines devised by people may change, but Christ does not.

Therefore, believers need an unchanging standard by which teachings are examined.

Our faith is not supposed to drift with every new religious idea. It is anchored in the Christ revealed in Scripture.

“Jesus Christ”

The verse specifically names Jesus Christ.

The writer of Hebrews has already presented Him as the Son, Creator, High Priest, sacrifice for sins, mediator of the new covenant, and the One through whom believers draw near unto God.

Hebrews begins by declaring concerning the Son:

“Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever...” — Hebrews 1:8 KJV

And Hebrews 1:12 says:

“...thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.”

Therefore, Hebrews 13:8 continues a truth already established earlier in the book.

Christ is not temporary.

His authority does not expire.

His identity does not change with generations.

“The Same Yesterday”

Yesterday directs our attention backward.

The Jesus Christ believers trust today is the same Christ revealed in Scripture.

His character has not changed.

His righteousness has not changed.

His holiness has not changed.

His compassion has not changed.

His authority has not changed.

His truth has not changed.

When we read of Christ's faithfulness in Scripture, we are not merely reading about someone who existed long ago. We are learning the character of the One in whom we presently trust.

Remembering yesterday's faithfulness strengthens today's faith.

“And To Day”

Christ is not merely the Christ of biblical history.

He is Lord today.

This is important because sometimes we can read Scripture as though God's mighty works belong only to another generation.

Hebrews brings the truth into the present:

“and to day.”

Whatever season we are experiencing, Christ remains who He is.

When circumstances are peaceful, He is the same.

When circumstances become difficult, He is the same.

When prayers are answered quickly, He is the same.

When we must wait, He is the same.

Our circumstances do not determine Christ's character.

“And For Ever”

The verse then carries our faith beyond yesterday and today:

“and for ever.”

Our future is uncertain to us, but Christ is not uncertain.

We do not know everything tomorrow will contain.

We cannot control every circumstance.

We cannot predict every change that may occur.

But believers can enter an unknown future trusting an unchanging Christ.

The One who sustained His people yesterday remains faithful today and will not cease to be who He is tomorrow.

An Unchanging Christ in a Changing World

Hebrews 13:8 provides stability in a world characterized by change.

Human philosophies change.

Popular opinions change.

Cultural standards change.

Religious trends change.

But Christianity is not built upon whatever happens to be popular in a particular generation.

Christ remains the foundation.

This is especially important when we connect verse 8 with the warning in verse 9:

“Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines.”

Because Christ is the same, believers should not continually move from one doctrine to another simply because something sounds new, impressive, or popular.

Every teaching should be examined according to the Word of God.

Does This Mean God Always Works in Exactly the Same Way?

The statement that Jesus Christ is the same does not mean that every circumstance will be identical or that God must deal with every person in precisely the same manner.

Scripture itself records different circumstances, different callings, different assignments, and different ways in which God worked throughout biblical history.

The unchanging truth concerns who Christ is.

His character remains constant.

His holiness remains constant.

His righteousness remains constant.

His divine identity remains constant.

His faithfulness remains constant.

His purposes do not become corrupted by the changing conditions of the world.

This distinction protects us from turning Hebrews 13:8 into a promise that every historical event must continually repeat itself.

The verse gives us something greater:

an unchanging Christ.

Personal Application

Hebrews 13:8 challenges me to ask where I have placed my confidence.

If my security depends entirely upon circumstances remaining comfortable, I will eventually become unsettled because circumstances change.

If my confidence depends entirely upon people, I may become disappointed because people change.

If my faith follows every new teaching, I can become spiritually unstable.

But when my faith is anchored in Jesus Christ, I have an unchanging foundation.

When I am uncertain about tomorrow, I can remember:

Jesus Christ is the same.

When the world around me changes:

Jesus Christ is the same.

When I remember how God has sustained me through previous seasons:

Jesus Christ is the same.

When I encounter teachings that contradict Scripture:

Jesus Christ is the same.

My responsibility is not to reshape Christ according to the age in which I live. My responsibility is to know Him as He is revealed in Scripture and faithfully follow Him.

A Truth to Remember

Yesterday reminds me of His faithfulness.

Today reminds me of His presence.

Forever reminds me that His character will never change.

My circumstances may change, but the foundation of my faith does not have to change with them.
