John 3:35 - The Father Loveth the Son
“The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.” — John 3:35, KJV
John 3:35 reveals both the Father’s love for the Son and the authority given to Jesus Christ. John the Baptist had already declared concerning Jesus, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). Jesus was not merely another prophet or teacher; He came from above and possesses an authority greater than John’s.
“The Father loveth the Son” reveals the unique relationship between the Father and Jesus Christ. The ministry of Jesus flows from this relationship of divine love. John repeatedly emphasizes this truth: the Father loves the Son, reveals His works to Him, and bears witness concerning Him (John 5:20, 36–37).
“And hath given all things into his hand” speaks of Christ’s authority and supremacy. To have something placed “into his hand” signifies that it has been entrusted to His authority. Jesus later declared, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18).
This also prepares us for the serious statement in the following verse:
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life...” — John 3:36
Because the Father has given all things into the Son’s hand, our response to the Son matters eternally. We cannot honor the Father while rejecting the Son whom the Father has sent.
Personal Application
John 3:35 reminds us that Jesus Christ is worthy of our complete trust. Whatever is beyond our control is not beyond His authority. Our lives, our future, and our salvation can safely be entrusted to Him.
Like John the Baptist, our attitude should be:
“He must increase, but I must decrease.”
The more clearly we understand who Christ is, the less concerned we become with exalting ourselves and the more concerned we become with exalting Him.
