“As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.” — John 15:9, KJV
John 15:9 reveals both the depth of Christ’s love and the believer’s responsibility to remain in conscious fellowship with that love. Jesus compares His love for His disciples with the Father’s love toward Him: “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you.” This places Christ’s love within the eternal relationship between the Father and the Son—it is not shallow, temporary, or dependent upon changing circumstances.
The words “continue ye in my love” carry the idea of remaining, abiding, dwelling, or staying. The Greek verb is menō (μένω), the same important word used throughout John 15: “Abide in me” (John 15:4). Jesus is calling His disciples to live continually within the sphere of His love.
The following verse explains how this abiding love is expressed: “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love” (John 15:10). Therefore, abiding in Christ’s love is not merely an emotional experience. Love and obedience belong together. We do not obey Christ to earn His love; rather, a life abiding in Him produces loving obedience to Him.
Personal Application
When circumstances become difficult, we may be tempted to measure Christ’s love by what is happening around us. John 15:9 teaches us to measure His love by who He is. Christ calls us to remain rooted in His love, trust His Word, obey His commandments, and refuse to allow trials to persuade us that He has abandoned us.
Remember: You do not have to manufacture Christ’s love. Jesus says, “I have loved you.” Your calling is to abide in that love.
