John 6:39 — I Should Lose Nothing
“And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.” — John 6:39, KJV
John 6:39 gives a powerful picture of Christ's faithfulness toward those whom the Father has given Him. Jesus had just declared that He came down from heaven not to do His own will, “but the will of him that sent me” (John 6:38).
“I should lose nothing” emphasizes Christ's ability to preserve what has been entrusted to Him. Our salvation rests not merely upon the weakness of human ability, but upon the faithfulness and power of Christ.
Jesus then carries the promise beyond this present life:
“But should raise it up again at the last day.”
Christ's saving work includes not only forgiveness and present spiritual life but also the believer's future resurrection. Death does not place God's people beyond Christ's power. The One who gives eternal life also possesses authority to raise the dead.
The next verse develops the thought further:
“And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” — John 6:40, KJV
Notice the repeated declaration: “I will raise him up.” Jesus repeats this assurance throughout John 6 (vv. 39, 40, 44, 54).
Personal Application
John 6:39 gives believers confidence in the keeping power of Christ. Our hope does not end at the grave. Jesus has promised resurrection at the last day.
When life feels uncertain, remember that what belongs to Christ is not beyond His care.
Christ receives.
Christ keeps.
Christ gives everlasting life.
And Christ will raise His people at the last day.
Our confidence is ultimately in the One who declared, “I should lose nothing.”
