John 1:18 — He Hath Declared Him
“No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.” — John 1:18, KJV
John 1:18 brings the opening section of John's Gospel to a powerful conclusion. God in the fullness of His divine nature is beyond human sight, yet Jesus Christ has made the Father known.
“No man hath seen God at any time” does not mean Scripture contains no manifestations of God. The Old Testament records occasions when God revealed Himself in visible manifestations. Rather, John emphasizes that no human being has comprehended or beheld God in the fullness of His divine essence. Compare John 6:46 and 1 Timothy 6:16.
John then identifies “the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father.” The expression “in the bosom of the Father” communicates intimacy, closeness, and the unique relationship between the Father and the Son. Jesus does not speak about the Father as a distant observer—He knows the Father uniquely and intimately.
Finally, John says, “he hath declared him.” The Greek verb exēgeomai carries the idea of making known, explaining, or revealing. It is the word from which we derive exegesis. Jesus is, in this profound sense, the One who makes the unseen God known.
This agrees with Jesus' later words:
“He that hath seen me hath seen the Father...” — John 14:9, KJV
Jesus is not saying that He and the Father are the same Person. Rather, the Son perfectly reveals the Father's character, works, truth, and glory.
Personal Application
If we want to understand what God is like, we must look to Jesus Christ. We should not construct our understanding of God merely from human philosophy, tradition, feelings, or imagination.
Christ reveals the Father.
Look at His holiness.
Look at His compassion.
Look at His truth.
Look at His mercy.
Look at His authority.
Look at His love.
The invisible God has not left Himself without revelation. The Son has declared Him.
