John 10:30 — I and My Father Are One

“I and my Father are one.” — John 10:30, KJV

John 10:30 is one of Jesus’ strongest declarations concerning the profound unity between Himself and the Father. The immediate context is important. Jesus has just said that He gives His sheep eternal life, that no one can pluck them out of His hand, and that no one can pluck them out of His Father’s hand (John 10:27–29).

Then He declares:

“I and my Father are one.”

Jesus does not say, “I am the Father.” He distinguishes Himself from the Father by saying “I” and “my Father.” Yet He also declares that they are “one.” The verse therefore expresses unity without erasing the distinction between the Father and the Son.

In context, this oneness certainly includes unity of power, purpose, and action in preserving Christ’s sheep. Yet John's Gospel presents an even deeper relationship between Father and Son. The Son was “with God” and “was God” (John 1:1), does the works of the Father (John 5:19), gives life (John 5:21), receives honor together with the Father (John 5:23), and declares, “the Father is in me, and I in him” (John 10:38).

The reaction of Jesus’ opponents also shows how seriously they understood His statement. They immediately took up stones, explaining:

“...because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.” — John 10:33, KJV

Personal Application

John 10:30 gives believers tremendous assurance. The same passage that reveals Christ's unity with the Father also teaches the security of His sheep.

Jesus says:

“Neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”
Then He says no one can pluck them from His Father's hand.

The believer is therefore called to trust the power and faithfulness of Christ.

The Son keeps His sheep.
The Father keeps His sheep.
The Father and Son work in perfect unity.
“I and my Father are one.”
