John 5:37 — The Father Himself Hath Borne Witness of Me

“And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.” — John 5:37, KJV

John 5:37 is part of Jesus’ response to those who questioned His authority. Throughout this chapter, Jesus presents several witnesses confirming who He is: John the Baptist, His works, the Father, and the Scriptures.

Jesus declares, “the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me.” Christ did not come merely on His own human authority. The Father sent the Son and testified concerning Him. At Jesus’ baptism, for example, the Father declared, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).

Jesus then tells His opponents, “Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.” His point becomes clearer in the next verse: although they claimed devotion to God, His word was not abiding in them because they refused to believe the One whom He sent (John 5:38).

This exposes an important spiritual problem: a person can possess extensive knowledge of Scripture while still resisting the One to whom Scripture points. Jesus continues:

“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” — John 5:39, KJV

The Scriptures were not given merely to increase religious knowledge. They bear witness to Christ.

Personal Application

John 5:37 challenges us not merely to study God's Word intellectually, but to receive its testimony concerning Jesus Christ.

We should never become so occupied with biblical information that we overlook the One revealed through Scripture.

The Father sent the Son.
The Father testified concerning the Son.
The Scriptures testify concerning the Son.
And we are called to believe the One whom the Father sent.
