Romans 8:38–39 - Nothing Can Separate Us from the Love of God

 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 8:38–39 KJV

Romans 8:38–39 closes one of the most encouraging chapters in Scripture with Paul's confident declaration that nothing in all creation has the power to separate God's people from His love in Christ Jesus.

Paul does not say this because believers will never experience hardship. Earlier in the chapter he speaks about suffering, tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, and the sword. His confidence is that none of these things can sever the believer from the love of God revealed in Christ.

“For I Am Persuaded”

Paul begins:

“For I am persuaded…”

This is settled conviction.

Paul had experienced persecution, rejection, suffering, imprisonment, opposition, and danger. Yet those experiences did not convince him that God had stopped loving him.

Our circumstances can change without God's love changing.

There will be times when we feel surrounded by God's goodness and other times when hardship makes His presence difficult to perceive. Paul anchors assurance not in changing emotions but in the faithfulness of God in Christ.

“Neither Death, Nor Life”

Paul begins with two extremes:

death and life.

Death cannot separate the believer from God's love.

Neither can the trials, uncertainties, disappointments, responsibilities, and difficulties encountered throughout life.

This means that whether we are living or facing death, we remain within the reach of God's love.

“Nor Angels, Nor Principalities, Nor Powers”

Paul then moves beyond visible circumstances to spiritual powers.

Whatever distinctions Paul intends among these spiritual beings and authorities, his central point is unmistakable:

No created spiritual power is greater than God's love and authority in Christ.

Believers therefore do not need to live as though some spiritual force might become powerful enough to remove them from Christ.

God's love is not fragile.

“Nor Things Present”

The things happening right now cannot separate us from God's love.

Present circumstances can sometimes become overwhelming because they are immediately before us.

Present pain.

Present financial difficulty.

Present disappointment.

Present opposition.

Present uncertainty.

Present grief.

But Paul declares that “things present” do not possess the authority to separate God's people from His love.

Your present trouble may affect your circumstances, but it does not determine God's love for you.

“Nor Things to Come”

Paul also addresses the future.

Many people can trust God concerning what has already happened but become anxious about what might happen next.

Paul includes the unknown future in his declaration:

“nor things to come.”

Whatever tomorrow brings, it will not surprise God.

We do not know everything awaiting us, but we know the One who already stands beyond what we cannot see.

Our confidence is not that tomorrow will contain no difficulty.

Our confidence is that tomorrow cannot separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

“Nor Height, Nor Depth”

Paul stretches the language further:

“Nor height, nor depth…”

There is no place so high and no place so low that God's love cannot reach His people.

There may be seasons when we feel spiritually strong and seasons when we feel weak.

There may be mountaintop experiences and deep valleys.

But God's love is not restricted to the mountaintop.

He is still God in the valley.

“Nor Any Other Creature”

Paul now removes every possible exception:

“nor any other creature…”

The KJV word “creature” here carries the sense of something created. Thus Paul gathers the entire created order into his statement.

After naming death, life, angels, principalities, powers, the present, the future, height, and depth, Paul essentially declares:

And if I have left anything out, nothing else in creation can do it either.

Creation cannot overpower the Creator.

“Shall Be Able to Separate Us”

Notice the language:

“shall be able…”

Paul is speaking about ability and power.

The question is not simply whether something will attempt to trouble God's people. The question is whether anything possesses sufficient power to separate them from God's love.

Paul's answer is emphatic:

No.

Trouble can hurt us.

Loss can grieve us.

Persecution can afflict us.

People can abandon us.

Circumstances can change around us.

But none of these things possesses the power to separate us from God's love in Christ.

“From the Love of God”

This entire passage is about God's love.

Earlier Paul asks:

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” — Romans 8:35 KJV

Then he concludes by speaking of:

“the love of God…”

The believer's security rests not upon the strength of our love for God but upon the steadfastness of God's love toward us in Christ.

Our emotions fluctuate.

Our circumstances change.

Our understanding may sometimes be limited.

But God's love is not governed by those fluctuations.

“Which Is in Christ Jesus Our Lord”

Paul does not speak vaguely about love.

He specifically identifies:

“the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

God's love is revealed and experienced through Jesus Christ.

The cross demonstrates it.

The resurrection confirms Christ's victory.

His intercession assures us that our risen Lord continues His work on behalf of His people.

That is why Romans 8:34 declares that Christ “is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.”

The chapter therefore moves toward a magnificent conclusion:

Christ died for us.
Christ rose for us.
Christ intercedes for us.
God is for us.
And nothing can separate us from His love in Christ.

Personal Application

There may be moments when hardship makes you ask:

Does God still love me?

Romans 8:38–39 tells us not to measure God's love by the difficulty of our circumstances.

You may experience loss without losing God's love.

You may experience grief without losing God's love.

You may walk through uncertainty without losing God's love.

You may face spiritual opposition without losing God's love.

You may not know what tomorrow holds, but tomorrow cannot separate you from God's love.

Therefore, when your feelings change, return to what God has declared.

When circumstances become difficult, remember what Paul was persuaded of.

When the future appears uncertain, confess:

Neither death nor life.
Neither the present nor the future.
Neither height nor depth.
Neither spiritual powers nor anything else in creation shall be able to separate me from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
