Lois | The Grandmother Whose Unfeigned Faith Reached Another Generation

Primary Scriptures: 2 Timothy 1:5; 2 Timothy 3:14–15

Introduction

Speak His Word Only speaks forth another powerful Woman of the Bible.

Her name is Lois, the grandmother of Timothy and the mother of Eunice. Her Greek name, Lōïs (Λωΐς), is traditionally associated with ideas such as “better” or “more desirable,” although the exact etymology is uncertain.

Lois receives only a brief mention in Scripture, but what Paul says about her is profound:

“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.”
— 2 Timothy 1:5, KJV

Paul remembered Lois not for wealth, position, or public recognition. He remembered her for faith—genuine, sincere, unfeigned faith.

That faith did not end with Lois. Paul saw it in her daughter Eunice, and then he recognized it in her grandson Timothy.

Here we see three generations touched by sincere faith: Lois → Eunice → Timothy.

An Important Biblical Clarification

There is one detail I would correct before you publish the article. Scripture identifies Eunice, not Lois, as the Jewish woman married to a Greek man.

Acts 16:1 says concerning Timothy:

“…the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek.”

That woman was Eunice, Timothy's mother. Scripture does not tell us who Lois's husband was.

Keeping that distinction will make your Women of the Bible article more precise.

Lois — A Woman of Unfeigned Faith

The word Paul uses is particularly important: “unfeigned.”

The Greek word anypokritos (ἀνυπόκριτος) means sincere, genuine, without hypocrisy.

Lois did not merely possess religious knowledge. Paul describes a faith that dwelt in her.

Her faith had taken up residence in her life.

It was real. It was observable. And its influence reached her family.

Paul later reminded Timothy:

“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures…”
— 2 Timothy 3:15, KJV

Although this verse does not specifically name Lois and Eunice as Timothy's teachers, when read alongside 2 Timothy 1:5, it gives us a compelling picture of a household in which faith and knowledge of Scripture were present from Timothy's childhood.

From Grandmother to Mother to Son

There is something beautiful about the order Paul gives:

Lois → Eunice → Timothy.

Paul says the faith “dwelt first” in Lois, then in Eunice, and he was persuaded that it dwelt in Timothy also.

This does not mean salvation is inherited automatically. Every generation must personally believe God.

But one generation can teach, demonstrate, encourage, and model faith before the next generation.

Lois could not believe for Timothy. But she could live faithfully before her family.

Eunice could not give Timothy salvation simply because she was his mother.

But she could raise him around the truth of God's Word. Timothy then had to possess genuine faith himself.

Personal Application — What Are We Passing to the Next Generation?

Lois challenges every mother, grandmother, teacher, and spiritual mother to consider:

What will remain in the next generation because I lived?

We spend considerable effort thinking about what we will leave our children materially. Scripture reminds us that there is another inheritance worth considering—a legacy of faith.

A grandmother may never stand behind a pulpit. She may never write a book. She may never become widely known. 

But if she teaches her children and grandchildren to know God's Word, pray, trust God, and walk faithfully before Him, the influence of her life can reach places she herself will never go.

Lois probably could not have imagined all that Timothy would eventually experience in ministry.

Yet Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, would eventually look at Timothy and remember the faith of his grandmother.

Let Your Faith Be Seen at Home

It is possible to appear spiritual publicly while our family sees something entirely different privately.

Lois's faith was described as unfeigned.

That challenges us to possess the same faith at home that we profess before others.

Let your children see you pray.

Let them see you study Scripture.

Let them see you trust God during adversity.

Let them hear you speak God's Word.

Let them see repentance when you are wrong.

Let them observe forgiveness, compassion, integrity, and obedience.

Children and grandchildren learn not only from what we tell them about God but also from what they see us do because we believe God.

Grandmothers Still Have a Ministry

Lois is particularly encouraging for grandmothers.

Your influence does not end because your children become adults.

There remains an opportunity to pray for, encourage, teach, and strengthen another generation.

Psalm 145:4 declares:

“One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.”

Tell the next generation what God has done.

Tell them how He answered prayer.

Tell them how He sustained you.

Tell them what His Word teaches.

Give them more than family history.

Give them a testimony of God's faithfulness.

Conclusion

Lois receives only one named reference in the New Testament, yet that single reference reveals a powerful legacy.

She possessed unfeigned faith.

That faith was evident in her daughter Eunice.

Paul then recognized genuine faith in her grandson Timothy.

Timothy would become Paul's trusted fellow worker, minister of the gospel, and recipient of two New Testament epistles.

Behind Timothy's ministry stood a family in which the Scriptures and sincere faith had been present from his childhood.

Lois reminds us that some of the most important ministry takes place before anyone recognizes it as ministry.

A grandmother teaching.

A mother believing.

A child learning Scripture.

And years later, that child serving God.

Never underestimate what God can do through one woman's sincere faith when that faith is faithfully demonstrated before the next generation.
