Key Scripture: Psalm 19:1 (KJV)
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
When you look outside on a bright sunny day, have you ever wondered, “Why did God make the Sun?”
The Bible has a lot to teach us about it!
1. God Made the Sun
Genesis 1:16
“And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night…”
The Sun did not make itself. God created it.
God made the Sun to give light during the day. He also appointed the heavenly lights to help mark days, years, signs, and seasons.
Think About It
Who made the Sun?
Answer: God!
2. The Sun Shows Us How Great God Is
Psalm 19:1
When we see how enormous, bright, powerful, and beautiful the Sun is, we should remember:
The One who created the Sun is greater than the Sun!
The Sun should never be worshiped. It points us toward its Creator.
Remember:
We don't worship creation.
We worship the God who created it.
3. The Bible Calls the Sun a Bridegroom
This is a very interesting part!
Psalm 19:5 (KJV) says the Sun:
“Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber…”
Imagine a bridegroom opening the doors of his chamber and coming out dressed and ready for his wedding.
David says the Sun is like that bridegroom.
Every morning it seems to come out of its chamber and begin its journey across the sky.
Sun rises → travels across our sky → Sun sets
The Sun isn't actually coming out of a room. The Bible is using a beautiful picture in words to describe what we see.
4. The Sun Runs a Race
Psalm 19 gives us another picture.
Psalm 19:5 says the Sun:
“…rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.”
Think about a strong runner!
START → RUN THE COURSE → FINISH
Day after day, the Sun appears to follow its appointed course.
David looked at this and saw God's order.
God is a God of order.
5. The Sun Gives Us Light
Imagine walking into a completely dark room.
You cannot see where you're going.
Then someone turns on the light.
Suddenly you can see!
Jesus used light to teach us something very important.
John 8:12
Jesus said:
“I am the light of the world…”
Jesus wasn't saying He was the physical Sun.
He was teaching us a spiritual truth.
Just as physical light helps our eyes see, Jesus gives us spiritual light so that we can know the truth and walk with God.
6. What Is the “Sun of Righteousness”?
Malachi 4:2
God promised:
“But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings…”
Imagine waiting through a long, dark night.
Then suddenly—
LIGHT APPEARS!
Morning has come.
That's the picture Malachi gives us.
Darkness will not last forever. God's righteousness, healing, and deliverance will arise.
Christians have long understood this beautiful prophecy in connection with Jesus Christ.
7. “The LORD God Is a Sun”
Here's another surprising Scripture.
Psalm 84:11
“For the LORD God is a sun and shield…”
Does that mean God is literally the Sun?
No.
The Bible is giving us a comparison.
The Sun gives physical light.
God gives us what we need spiritually:
God gives light.
God gives grace.
God gives protection.
God gives good things.
That's why the verse doesn't only say God is a sun.
It also calls Him a shield.
A shield protects.
8. Should We Worship the Sun?
No!
God warned His people about this.
Deuteronomy 4:19
They were not to look at the Sun, Moon, and stars and begin worshiping them.
The Sun may be amazing, but the Sun has a Creator.
So when you see a beautiful sunrise, instead of worshiping the Sun, you can say:
“Lord, what You created is beautiful. You are an amazing Creator!”
9. The Sun Helps Us Understand God's Order
God said the heavenly lights would help mark:
Days • Seasons • Years
Think about it.
Morning comes.
Evening comes.
Seasons change.
Years pass.
Creation follows patterns God established.
Genesis 1:14
God made the heavenly lights:
“…for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.”
10. Jesus Is Greater Than the Sun
Here is the most important lesson.
Jesus isn't simply another part of creation.
The Bible teaches that creation was made through Him.
Colossians 1:16
“For by him were all things created…”
That means:
Jesus is Lord over the Sun.
Jesus is Lord over the Moon.
Jesus is Lord over the stars.
Jesus is Lord over the Earth.
Jesus is Lord over all creation.
The Sun may be enormous compared with Earth.
But compared with its Creator?
It is still something He made.
