Joshua 18:28 — The Inheritance of Benjamin | Speak His Word Only

 

 “And Zelah, Eleph, and Jebusi, which is Jerusalem, Gibeath, and Kirjath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.” — Joshua 18:28 KJV

Joshua 18:28 concludes the record of the cities assigned to the tribe of Benjamin. At first glance, it may appear to be simply a list of ancient locations, but the verse is part of something much greater: God was fulfilling His promise concerning Israel's inheritance in the land of Canaan.

“This Is the Inheritance”

The word inheritance is important throughout Joshua. Benjamin did not simply choose territory for himself. The tribe received an allotted portion within the land God had promised Israel.

This reminds us that God's promises may take generations to unfold, but the passing of time does not make His Word ineffective. What had been promised to the fathers was becoming a geographical reality for their descendants.

“Jebusi, Which Is Jerusalem”

One name in the list immediately stands out:

“Jebusi, which is Jerusalem”

The reference identifies Jerusalem in connection with the Jebusites. The Hebrew text likewise associates “Jebusi” with Jerusalem. 

At this point in biblical history, Jerusalem had not yet become the great royal and worship center we associate with later Scripture. David would eventually capture the Jebusite stronghold and establish Jerusalem as his royal city.

This gives Joshua 18:28 special significance: a city mentioned within Benjamin's inheritance would later occupy a central place in the biblical story.

“According to Their Families”

Benjamin's inheritance was distributed “according to their families.” God's provision was not described only at the national level; Scripture records tribes, families, boundaries, cities, and villages.

The detailed record demonstrates order within Israel's possession of the land.

A Lesson About God's Faithfulness

Joshua 18:28 reminds us not to overlook passages simply because they contain lists of places or names. These details form part of the historical record of God's covenant dealings with Israel.

What God had promised was being fulfilled tribe by tribe, boundary by boundary, city by city.

There is also a beautiful lesson in Jerusalem's appearance here. At this stage, it is one city within a territorial description. Later, Jerusalem becomes associated with David, the temple, Israel's worship, the ministry and crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and biblical prophecy.

Something that appears small in one chapter may become extremely significant as God's purpose unfolds.

Personal Application

Sometimes we expect God's promises to be fulfilled immediately and dramatically. Joshua reminds us that fulfillment can unfold progressively and according to God's appointed order.

Do not despise the small details of what God is doing.

A place that appears ordinary today may become important tomorrow. A small beginning may be part of something much larger than we presently understand.

Our responsibility is to remain faithful and trust the God who sees the entire story while we are living only one chapter at a time.
