Introduction
Genesis 6 marks a major turning point in the biblical account. As humanity multiplied upon the earth, wickedness, corruption, and violence increased, setting the stage for God's judgment through the Flood.
The chapter opens with the mysterious account of the “sons of God,” the “daughters of men,” and the Nephilim (giants) (Genesis 6:1–4). This passage has been interpreted in different ways throughout Jewish and Christian history and is important for understanding later biblical references to rebellion, judgment, and the days of Noah.
Genesis then turns our attention to the condition of humanity's heart:
“And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth...” — Genesis 6:5
Yet in the midst of widespread corruption, one man stands apart: Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD (Genesis 6:8). Noah is described as a just man who walked with God.
God reveals to Noah that judgment is coming and commands him to build the ark, giving detailed instructions for its construction. God also declares that He will establish His covenant with Noah and preserve Noah, his household, and representatives of the living creatures through the coming Flood.
Genesis 6 therefore brings several important themes together: spiritual rebellion, human corruption, divine judgment, grace, obedience, covenant, and preservation. Even when the earth had become filled with violence, God's redemptive purpose continued.
