Hebrews 7:9-10 - From the Loin of Abraham | Speak His Word Only

“And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. For he
was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.” Hebrews 7:9–10 KJV 

Hebrews 7:9–10 explains the greatness of Melchisedec's priesthood in comparison with the later Levitical priesthood. The writer reaches back to Genesis 14, when Abraham met Melchisedec after returning from battle and gave him a tenth of the spoils.

“Levi Also…Payed Tithes in Abraham”

This statement is striking because Levi had not yet been born when Abraham met Melchisedec. Levi would later become Abraham's great-grandson through Isaac and Jacob.

Yet Hebrews says, in a representative or ancestral sense, that Levi “payed tithes in Abraham.” The passage itself explains this by saying Levi was still “in the loins” of his ancestor when Abraham met Melchisedec. 

The writer's argument is that the Levitical priesthood, which would later receive tithes from Israel, was represented in its ancestor Abraham when Abraham himself gave a tithe to Melchisedec.

Why Is This Important?

The point of Hebrews 7 is larger than teaching about tithing. The writer is establishing the superiority of the priesthood represented by Melchisedec over the Levitical order.

Abraham gave Melchisedec tithes, and Melchisedec blessed Abraham. Hebrews 7:7 states the principle:

“And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.” — Hebrews 7:7 KJV

Therefore, the argument progresses:

Abraham gave tithes to Melchisedec → Levi was represented in Abraham → therefore the Levitical priesthood itself is presented as subordinate to the order represented by Melchisedec.

Why does Hebrews establish this?

Because Jesus did not descend from the tribe of Levi. He came from Judah, yet Hebrews presents Him as the eternal High Priest:

“Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.” — Hebrews 7:17 KJV

The chapter is therefore pointing beyond Levi and ultimately toward the superior and everlasting priesthood of Jesus Christ.

Personal Application

Hebrews 7:9–10 reminds us that our confidence before God does not rest in an earthly priesthood. Jesus Christ is our great High Priest.

Human priests served for a limited lifetime, but Christ's priesthood is enduring. Later in the chapter we read:

“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him…” — Hebrews 7:25 KJV

Our hope rests not in human ancestry, religious position, or ceremonial status, but in Jesus Christ, our everlasting High Priest.
