Genesis Chapter 1 — The Creation | Genesis Bible Study
Introduction
Genesis Chapter 1 opens the Bible with one of its most foundational declarations:
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1 KJV
Before humanity, nations, kingdoms, or civilizations existed, God was already there. Genesis does not begin by attempting to prove God's existence; it begins by declaring God as the Creator and source of all things.
The chapter describes creation as moving from an earth that was “without form, and void” into an ordered world filled with light, life, purpose, and abundance. Again and again, creation responds to God's command:
“And God said...”
God speaks, and what He commands comes into being. Light appears, waters are divided, dry land emerges, vegetation grows, heavenly lights are appointed, living creatures fill the waters and skies, animals inhabit the earth, and finally humanity is created.
The climax of the chapter comes in Genesis 1:26–27:
“Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...”
Human beings are distinguished from the rest of earthly creation because they are made in the image and likeness of God. Male and female receive God's blessing and are given responsibility to be fruitful, multiply, replenish the earth, and exercise dominion over the creatures God made.
Genesis 1 also repeatedly declares that what God created was “good.” After the creation of humanity and the completion of His work, God looks upon everything He has made and declares it “very good.”
Genesis Chapter 1 therefore establishes foundational truths that continue throughout Scripture: God is Creator, His Word carries authority, creation has order and purpose, humanity bears God's image, and everything ultimately belongs to Him.
Central Theme
Creation begins with God, proceeds by the Word of God, and reflects the wisdom, authority, order, and purpose of God.
For your In His Image – Genesis Bible Study, Genesis 1 establishes the foundation for the entire study: before we can understand who humanity is, we must first understand the God whose image humanity was created to bear.
