Genesis Bible Study - Elohim Vs Other gods | Speak His Word Only
1. Elohim means “God of power and majesty”
The word Elohim is the first name used for God in the Bible (Genesis 1:1 — “In the beginning, Elohim created the heavens and the earth.”).
It’s plural in form but singular in meaning, which already sets it apart.
The plural form suggests fullness, completeness, and majesty — not “many gods,” but the God who embodies all divine power.
When used of the true God, it shows that He is self-existent, all-powerful, and beyond limitation — not one among others, but above all.
2. Elohim is the Creator — not created
Other ancient “gods” in surrounding cultures (Egyptian, Canaanite, Babylonian, etc.) were part of creation — tied to the sun, rivers, fertility, storms, or war.
But Elohim created the heavens and the earth — everything visible and invisible.
That means He:
Exists before time
Needs nothing to exist
Rules over all things He made
This separates Him completely from man-made deities, who were often local, limited, or dependent on human rituals to “stay strong.”
3. Elohim is moral and relational
Pagan gods were often portrayed as selfish, violent, or immoral.
Elohim, however, reveals Himself as holy, righteous, and loving — a God who not only rules but relates.
He made mankind in His image (Genesis 1:27), showing value and purpose.
He walks with His people, desires relationship, and is faithful to covenant promises.
4. Elohim is revealed in unity and diversity
The name hints at divine mystery — a plurality within unity.
In the Hebrew Scriptures, you can see hints of the Trinity:
“Let Us make man in Our image.” (Genesis 1:26)
This sets Elohim apart from any single-image deity.
He is not fragmented but perfectly one — Father, Son, and Spirit in eternal harmony.
5. Elohim’s power is proven, not just proclaimed
Whereas other gods existed only in stories, Elohim’s power is manifested through history:
He speaks and worlds come into being.
He delivers Israel with signs and wonders.
He fulfills prophecy and brings redemption through Christ.
His reality is not myth but revelation — proven through time, life, and transformed hearts.
In short:
Elohim is different from all other gods because:
He alone is Creator, not created.
He is holy, eternal, and personal.
He is one in essence, yet rich in being.
His power, faithfulness, and love stand unmatched.
He doesn’t just demand worship — He invites relationship.
