Claudia: A Name in a Greeting, a Place Among Believers | Women of the Bible

 2 Timothy 4:21

Near the end of his letter to Timothy, Paul writes: “Do thy diligence to come before winter. Eubulus greeteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren” (KJV). Claudia appears in this one verse. We are given no account of her family, occupation, or ministry, but we do know that her greeting was carried to Timothy. 

What does Claudia’s name mean?

Claudia is the feminine form of Claudius, a Roman family name possibly derived from the Latin word claudus, meaning “lame” or “limping.” The origin is uncertain, and it tells us nothing about Claudia’s health or character. Her life should not be interpreted from a proposed meaning of her name. 

What can we as women learn from Claudia?

A personal greeting can strengthen a connection. Paul was urging Timothy to come before winter, and he included Claudia among those who greeted him. The verse reminds us that Christian fellowship can be expressed through simple, personal words.

Women belonged in the circle of believers named by Paul. Claudia is named alongside Eubulus, Pudens, and Linus. Although we do not know what work she did, we need not invent a title or a remarkable event to value her presence in the passage.

Read brief accounts with care. It is sometimes said that Claudia was related to Pudens or came from Britain, but 2 Timothy 4:21 does not establish either claim. What Scripture records is enough for this lesson: Claudia was a real woman whose name and greeting Paul included in his letter.

Personal application

I can ask myself: Who might be encouraged by hearing from me today? A thoughtful greeting, a message of prayer, or a visit may seem small, yet it can help someone know they have not been forgotten. Claudia’s mention also reminds me to value faithful women whose lives are known to God even when few details are recorded for others to see.

Prayer: Lord, help me notice people who need encouragement. Give me sincere words and a willing heart to reach out. Teach me to value each person in Your family, whether their work is widely known or quietly done. Amen.
