Abihail: A Woman Remembered by Name | Women of the Bible

Reference clarification: Numbers 3:35 names a different Abihail—the father of Zuriel, a leader among the Merarites. For a Women of the Bible study, the passage that clearly names a woman called Abihail is 1 Chronicles 2:29. 

What does Abihail’s name mean?

Abihail is a Hebrew name commonly understood as “my father is strength” or “father of might.” The element ḥayil can convey strength or valor. The name’s meaning gives us a thought to reflect on, but Scripture does not say why this woman received it or describe her character through it.

What does Scripture tell us about her?

The KJV says, “And the name of the wife of Abishur was Abihail, and she bare him Ahban, and Molid” (1 Chronicles 2:29). She is named as Abishur’s wife and the mother of Ahban and Molid. No speech, decision, or further event from her life is recorded. 

What can we as women learn?

A brief record is still worth reading carefully. Abihail’s name is preserved in a family list. We can recognize her place in that history without creating a story about her feelings, faith, or achievements that the text does not give us.

A woman’s worth is greater than the details a genealogy records. This verse identifies Abihail through her marriage and children because it is tracing a family line. It does not tell us all that made up her life. We should be just as careful not to reduce the women around us to a role or a brief description.

Strength can be a prayer without being a claim about her character. Her name can prompt us to ask God for strength. It cannot prove that Abihail displayed a particular kind of courage in an event Scripture never recounts.

Personal application

When I feel that my work or life is known only in fragments, I can remember that a short written account is not the whole of a person. I can ask God for strength for today’s responsibilities, and I can take time to learn the names and stories of women whom others pass over.
