Romans 6:4 - Walk in Newness of Life

“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death... even so we also should walk in newness of life.” — Romans 6:4 KJV

To “walk in newness of life” means that the believer's union with Christ is intended to produce a changed manner of living. Paul connects Christ's death, burial, and resurrection with the believer's relationship to the old life of sin.

The word “walk” refers to the continuing course or conduct of one's life. Newness of life is therefore more than a single spiritual experience; it is a new way of living that flows from belonging to the risen Christ.

Paul's argument throughout Romans 6 is that grace is not permission to continue under sin's rule. He asks:

“How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?” — Romans 6:2

This does not mean believers become incapable of sin. Rather, sin is no longer to reign as master. Romans 6:12 says, “Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body.”

Walking in newness of life means our old patterns no longer determine who we are becoming. Our thoughts, speech, relationships, desires, decisions, and conduct are increasingly brought under the lordship of Christ.

There is also resurrection power in Paul's teaching. He does not merely say, “Stop living the old way.” He points to Christ being raised from the dead. The Christian life is therefore not simply an attempt at self-improvement—it is life lived in relationship with the risen Christ.

New life should produce a new walk.

We have not been called merely to confess that Christ was raised from the dead; we are called to live as people whose lives have been changed by His resurrection.

The old life says, “Let sin reign.”
The new life says, “I belong to Christ.”
Therefore, walk in the newness of the life He has given you.
