John 14:12 — Greater Works Shall Ye Do

In John 14:12, Jesus speaks to His disciples shortly before His crucifixion and prepares them for His departure to the Father. He assures those who believe in Him that His work would continue through His followers rather than end with His earthly ministry. 

When Jesus says, “greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father,” He connects these works directly with His return to the Father. The following chapters explain that His departure would be accompanied by the coming and ministry of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16–17; 16:7).

“Greater works” should not be understood as believers becoming greater than Jesus. Rather, after Christ's death, resurrection, ascension, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, His ministry would extend through His disciples to people and nations far beyond the geographical reach of His earthly ministry. The book of Acts demonstrates this expansion as the gospel spreads and the Spirit works through believers.

At the same time, we should not explain the verse in a way that removes the supernatural works of Christ from consideration. Jesus explicitly says believers would do “the works that I do” and also speaks of “greater works.” 

Key Thought

Jesus returned to the Father, but His work did not stop. Through believers empowered by the Holy Spirit, the witness and works of Christ would continue and spread throughout the world.
