Matthew 16:27 — The Son of Man Shall Come in His Glory
“For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.” — Matthew 16:27, KJV
Matthew 16:27 points to the future return of Jesus Christ in glory and judgment. Jesus had just taught His disciples about denying themselves, taking up their cross, and following Him (Matthew 16:24–26). He then reminds them that present sacrifice must be viewed in light of eternity.
“The Son of man shall come” declares that Christ's earthly suffering was not the end of His story. He would return, not in humiliation, but “in the glory of his Father.” The One who was rejected will be revealed in divine majesty and authority.
“And then he shall reward every man according to his works” teaches personal accountability before Christ. Our works do not purchase salvation; salvation is by God's grace through faith. Nevertheless, Scripture consistently teaches that our deeds reveal how we have lived and that God judges righteously according to what we have done.
This makes the preceding question especially powerful:
“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” — Matthew 16:26
Personal Application
Jesus teaches us to evaluate life from an eternal perspective. Success is not ultimately measured by what we accumulate, how highly people regard us, or what we accomplish in this present world.
Christ is coming again, and our lives are accountable to Him.
Therefore, following Jesus may require sacrifice now, but nothing surrendered in obedience to Christ should be compared with the eternal value of belonging faithfully to Him.
Live today remembering that Christ is coming again.
