Key Scripture
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;” — Ephesians 5:25 KJV
Introduction
Ephesians 5:25 gives husbands a sacred responsibility: to love their wives according to the example of Jesus Christ. This is more than romantic affection or spoken promises. It is a faithful, sacrificial, and active love that seeks the wife’s well-being.
Christ’s love for the Church is the pattern. He did not merely say that He loved the Church—He demonstrated His love by giving Himself for her.
Brief Exposition
“Husbands, love your wives”
The husband is directly commanded to love his wife. His love should not depend upon changing emotions, convenient circumstances, or what he receives in return. It is a deliberate commitment expressed through patience, faithfulness, kindness, protection, and honor.
“Even as Christ also loved the church”
Jesus Christ is the husband’s perfect example. Christ loves His Church faithfully, patiently, and purposefully. He corrects without cruelty, leads without oppression, and serves without selfishness.
Biblical leadership is not permission to dominate. It is a responsibility to reflect Christ through humility, wisdom, integrity, and service.
“And gave himself for it”
Christ’s love was sacrificial. He surrendered Himself for the salvation and good of His Church. In the same way, a husband should be willing to lay aside selfish desires, pride, and personal convenience for the good of his wife and marriage.
This does not mean losing godly identity or wisdom. It means placing love, faithfulness, and responsibility above selfish ambition.
Characteristics of a Christlike Husband
A husband who follows Christ’s example:
- Loves his wife faithfully and consistently.
- Honors her dignity and listens to her concerns.
- Speaks with patience rather than cruelty.
- Protects the peace and faithfulness of the marriage.
- Serves without always demanding recognition.
- Prays for his wife and encourages her spiritual growth.
- Remains accountable to God for how he treats her.
- Repents sincerely when he has acted wrongly.
Personal Application for Husbands
Ask yourself: “Does the way I treat my wife help her understand the love of Christ?”
Choose one practical way to demonstrate sacrificial love today. Listen without interrupting, help carry a burden, speak words of appreciation, pray with her, or apologize for an unresolved wrong.
A husband’s love should make his wife feel valued, heard, protected, and honored. Christlike love is not proven by authority or words alone; it is revealed through daily acts of faithfulness, humility, and service.
Reflection Questions
- In what ways does my love resemble the love of Christ?
- Do I listen to my wife with patience and respect?
- What selfish habit do I need to surrender?
- Do my words bring healing or discouragement?
- How can I support my wife’s relationship with God?
- Is there anything for which I need to apologize?
Key Truth
A godly husband does not use leadership to control his wife. He uses his strength, influence, and authority to love, serve, protect, and honor her according to the example of Jesus Christ.
