Deuteronomy 29:29 — The Secret Things Belong Unto the LORD

“The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.” — Deuteronomy 29:29, KJV

Deuteronomy 29:29 teaches an important distinction between what God has chosen to keep within His own counsel and what He has chosen to reveal to His people.

“The secret things belong unto the LORD our God.” There are matters known fully only to God. His wisdom, purposes, timing, and knowledge extend far beyond human understanding. Scripture does not promise that we will receive an explanation for everything God does or permits.

This truth calls us to humility. We should not speculate beyond what God has revealed and then present our conclusions as though God Himself has spoken them.

But Moses continues:

“Those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever.”

God has not revealed everything, but He has revealed what He requires His people to know and obey. The emphasis of the verse is therefore not merely on discovering mysteries. It is on responding properly to revelation.

Notice the purpose:

“That we may do all the words of this law.”

God's revealed Word was given not simply to satisfy curiosity but to produce faith, obedience, and covenant faithfulness.

Personal Application

Sometimes we spend so much time trying to understand what God has not revealed that we neglect what He has already clearly spoken.

There are questions we may not be able to answer:

Why did God allow this?
When will God change this situation?
What exactly will happen next?

In those moments, Deuteronomy 29:29 teaches us to distinguish between mystery and revelation.

What God has kept secret—we entrust to Him.
What God has revealed—we believe, teach, and obey.

We do not need to know everything God knows in order to faithfully obey what God has said.
